Air Conditioning Maintenance - Air Conditioning Questions
1.10How often should I have shop air conditioning serviced?
Q.I am currently looking into leasing a shop, the one we are looking at has got 2 air conditioning units. I am just woundering if anybody can help me with these? Things like, How often should I get them serviced?, How much will it cost? How much will they cost to run? etc.
Thank You.
A.Once a month, change filters in both units whether they need it or not. Use disposable filters. The washable type cut off air flow and ckoke the compressor. If the indoor fans are belt driven, check the belts once a month. If you have condensate pumps, add one cup of bleach to them once a month.
Twice a year, have outdoor and indoor coils cleaned. A little maint. now can save you thousands in the future.
1.00Need air duct cleaning after 5 years without an air filter?
Q.My aunt has not cleaned their air ducts in 5 years(ever since they moved into the house) and they have not been using an air filter since. She lives in northern cali and uses the heater during the winter and the a/c not so much during the summer.
I saw the part where the air goes into the duct and it was covered with so much grey dust that i just HAD to vaccum it for her. There were 2 of these. They were both downstairs up close to the ceiling. Their house is 2 story. one was next to the stairs
I told them they should buy an air filter because her whole family has asthma including her, but they're scared that the filter might catch on fire!
Their youngest son (4) also just recently got asthma after winter.
But they dont really get allergies in the house in the summer because they have windows open but its only in the winter when they have the heater on
Dont you think they need this or is it just me?
Do you suggest air duct cleaning? since its been so long without a filter
A.To give you an idea of how much dirt is in the duct work you can look inside the ducts or supply air runs by removing the diffusers.
What you should be more concerned about is the dust that may be attached to the blower wheel and the evaporator coil and if the furnace is High efficiency it may have a secondary heat exchanger that may also plug up. If any of these actually plug right up with dust It may cause the air conditioning to freeze up. What is required is a full heating and cooling planned service maintenance check and cleaning. Many heating and cooling companies have a program in place and will go as called or will sign you up for an annual maintenance. The annual maintenance might be a good idea for them as they will also change the filter regularly. The usual cost of a maintenance program is what they would charge for 1 1/2 -2 hrs labour and any parts that you would need like a filter.

1.00How much to have the ducts cleaned and mold removed?
Q.I just moved into a new home that had never had the ducts cleaned. The house is a ranch with gas forced air heat on one zone with about 9 vents. I found this company on a coupon for $45 which included unlimited vents and a couple access holes. When the company began their work they found mold and the price skyrocketed from $45 to $1400. Does this sound like a screw job or is that price accurate for mold removal and duct cleaning?
A.Mold removal/remediation is entirely different from air duct cleaning. However, it is not uncommon to find mold in your air ducts. That is why we recommend the Electro Breeze Duct Mount UV kit at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/air-conditioning-filters.html. This unit will eliminate mold and bacteria from your indoor air and keep your air conditioning coils clean from mold.
You must consider that to remove the mold from your air ducts, the air duct cleaning company is entering into a potentially dangerous situation for their employees. This requires expensive equipment and a person with the skills to do the remediation properly. Now that they have knocked the mold loose, you will need the high efficiency filtration and ultra-violet light of the Electro Breeze DMUV kit to kill and capture the mold spores in your indoor air. I hope this helps.
1.00How do you clean the air ducts in a car?
Q.My car is getting older and I've noticed the air coming from the air conditioning ducts and air vents smells musty, dusty, and dirty. Is there a way I can clean the ducts and vents? Also, is this something I can get done at an auto detailer?
A.The answer to your 2nd question first. Maybe?! Some detailers will only clean/restore what they can reach, although there are some who might go the extra mile. The problem is, they don't want to be responsible for destroying your dash vents to get at the ducts.
When I worked in a body shop, we simply used compressed air through the vents to blow out the dust and dirt accumulated while the car sat inside being worked on.......some people even put pieces of air freshner directly in the vents to sweeten the smell afterwards.
1.00House in warranty - is the builder responsible for cleaning air ducts if it is causing black stains on carpet?
A.That is considered maintenance, you are responsible for cleaning your own air ducts or having someone come do it for you.
1.00How can I find a good air duct cleaner in the San Francisco Bay Area?
Q.My doctor told me I need to get my air duct cleaned, but I keep hearing all kinds of horror stories about air duct cleaners. Does anyone knows of a good air duct cleaner near San Francisco?

1.00I see a lot of air particles, how can I clean the air vents?
Q.I see a lot of air particles floating in my bedroom, It is more noticeable when my hearter/furnace is running. I get a feeling my ventillation pipes ought to be cleaned somehow. Should I get the Pros to do it ? or Can I do it myself, I am lucky to be a new owner but I am cash strapped. My furnace is feuled by natural gas,. What should I do regarding heating and ventallation maintenance. Thank so much for your advice.
A.Have an HVAC company come out that specializes in duct cleaning. Most have cameras where you can see the dust. Or you can purchase a better filter, either pleated or washable. They trap more particles.

Maintenance
With regular AC maintenance, your unit should be able to give you trouble free service for 15 years or more. Unfortunately, because an air conditioner is a strong piece of machinery that is designed to undertake wear and tear, many Louisville home owners neglect to undertake regular air conditioning maintenance of their appliance. Keep in mind that small annual investments made in maintaining your HVAC system can save you hundreds of dollars in repair expenses down the line. AC maintenance not only prevents air conditioner problems, but can also keep your AC functioning at its optimum efficiency. Studies show that an air conditioner can lose up to 5% of its sufficiency each year. However, with regular air conditioner maintenance you can keep your unit running at the same efficiency that you bought it for years. In fact, with periodic AC maintenance check ups your unit will hold on to up to 95% of its efficiency. Consider the cost of an annual HVAC maintenance check up, and compare it with the annual cost of HVAC repairs on your air conditioner. You will see that HVAC preventive maintenance is the cost effective choice. Besides, an AC that is well maintained can remove excess moisture from your home better than a neglected unit.
Fortunately, AC maintenance consists of a few easy-to-do tips. Clean your air vents and registers with a vacuum regularly, and clean the furnace filter or replace it at least once a month. The outside compressor can be cleaned using a hose. During cooling season, remember to cover the compressor. Check for leaks, and make sure that the condensate water is being drained easily from the unit. Clean your evaporator coil every year, and remove dirt and debris from near the condenser unit. Allow proper air flow by keeping the area around the condenser coil clean and free of debris. You can clean the fins on your condenser or evaporator coil by using a fin comb available at air conditioning supply stores. Get your ducts sealed with dust mastic. Keep your duct system free of obstructions by moving away furniture and curtains from near the system.
Investing a small amount in annual AC preventive maintenance can lead to substantial savings in repairs and operating costs down the line. To find professional air conditioner maintenance technicians who also offer annual HVAC preventive maintenance, fill out a form or contact one of our qualified contractors immediately by calling the phone numbers listed.
